Where do you draw inspiration from? 🌊 John Constable painted this view over the ocean on a family trip to Brighton in December 1826. It’s one of the very few oil sketches Constable completed outdoors in winter. On an earlier visit to Brighton, Constable had admired ‘the magnificence of the sea’. He later wrote how seabirds – some of which are included here – ‘add to the wildness and to the sentiment of melancholy, always attendant on the ocean’. John Constable, The Sea near Brighton 1826, currently on display at Reggia di Venaria Reale @lavenariareale in Turin, Italy, in an exhibition of the artist's landscape paintings.
