This project explores the famously haunted Victorian railway town of Matjiesfontein in the middle of the Karoo Veld (desert) in South Africa, where my family is from. This town frozen in time resonated with me from a young age after multiple visits and kept me curious about the supernatural. Whilst I always loved the ghost stories and mythology surrounding the place, I found the traditional Victorian veiled ghost trope too limiting so created ‘Queen Karoo; Ghost of the Desert’, a sorceress bound to the past, endlessly trapsing the dust, and confined to a cycle of stagnant, never-ending age.
