Let's talk about coffee capsules ☕ Did you know they can't be tossed in your kerbside recycling bin? Unfortunately, councils don't accept them. Whether your beloved brew happens to come in an aluminium or plastic capsule, it is still a no-go. Meanwhile, some compostable capsules can't go in your household compost! ❌ But the real question is: Why?
Here are the answers you've bean waiting for...
👈👉 Coffee capsules are made from a mixture of materials such as aluminium and plastic or a mixture of plastics. Although these components are recyclable on their own, they can be tricky to separate and require specific machinery, not to mention the logistics required to send them to different processors once separated. That's where TerraCycle comes in.
🚚 Then there are those excess coffee grounds left behind. To ensure these are removed, capsules are cleaned and grounds aren't wasted - we send ours to local composters. This requires another layer of equipment and logistics.
🌱 Many people assume that compostable coffee capsules can go straight into the household compost to let nature do its work but this is not always the case. Some capsules require commercial composting, where they will be combined with other organics and bacteria before microorganisms break them down into compost.
After almost two decades developing methods for recycling the 'un-recyclable', TerraCycle has partnered with multiple coffee capsule brands to make sure consumers can enjoy their coffee and then recycle the packaging. You can help us divert your fave capsules from landfill by signing up to the Lavazza, NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto®, Roast and Return, Seven Miles or the L'OR, Moccona, illy & Campos Recycling Program ♻️
