(turn sideways) video #4 : the alabama state capitol. it’s unreal to walk here. photo #5 : a crowd of our ancestors/elders/allies who joined with others on March 25th, 1965, protesting for voting rights, as they joined others that marched from Selma to Montgomery. they took over the streets and crowded the steps at the capitol. beautiful. photo #6 : the street entrance near the capitol photo #7 : white supremacists and those who upheld white supremacy in the streets near the capitol during the Montgomery Bus Boycott with confederate flags & signs that say "Who needs Niggers" "Fire Nigger workers" "Impeach Nigger - lover johnson" "Nigger go back to Africa" photo #8 : the bus stop where Rosa Parks was arrested. photo #9 : the Dexter King Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King served as a pastor from 1954-1960. photo #10 : these rows of rusted bronze pillars you see are memorials for black people who were lynched in america, there are 4,000 names, which doesn’t come close to the actual number of this horrific reality, they are categorized by name, state, and county. some of them are grouped together because full families were hung together, there are some that say "unknown" those are the ones that break me the most, as if it wasn’t possible to feel even more brokenness at something so vehemently evil. our seniors, teenagers, children, gone, just like that. i’m thankful i got to see the countless names of those who came before us/me. this country doesn’t want to teach the brutal realities of its history, but that history will find you, simply because it’s all around you, and also a part of you/us.
