photo #10 :
these rows of rusted bronze pillars you see are memorials for black people who were lynched in america, there are 4,000 names, which doesn’t come close to the actual number of this horrific reality, they are categorized by name, state, and county. some of them are grouped together because full families were hung together, there are some that say "unknown" those are the ones that break me the most, as if it wasn’t possible to feel even more brokenness at something so vehemently evil. our seniors, teenagers, children, gone, just like that. i’m thankful i got to see the countless names of those who came before us/me.
this country doesn’t want to teach the brutal realities of its history, but that history will find you, simply because it’s all around you, and also a part of you/us.
Alabama, 2022.
