i designed a book ! She Follows No Progression: A Theresa Hak Kyung Cha Reader is out in the world, and i am so so proud of and grateful for the book, for every contributor, for editors extraordinaire @junjuwon @langue_pendue for the assistance of @patrickymacdonald , for the work we all did together @wendyssubway, @poetry_project for hosting the launch and everyone who came, and of my own part in making it an object that both holds and is held 🫂🤍 the book traverses many mediums and ways of expression, including but not limited to poetry, photo, lecture, interview, film theory, drawing, translation, and through these, approaches Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s life and interdisciplinary practice with care, appreciation, analysis, in some ways, filling the gaps :’) In designing this object, I took careful consideration of Theresa’s own work as well as the work of all the contributors — the wide range of works provided a set of difficulties and in creating a system for them from all 296 pages cover to cover, i found much joy and satisfaction. my practice of design, the parts I find most enjoyable, has been one of finding a visual language through which layers of meaning become clarified. this book has been uniquely affirming in this practice, a rare moment when content aligns firmly with the design intention, becoming a book 🤍 one of my favorite details is the layflat binding — which we felt exemplified the vulnerability of the work that lies within, laid open and bare. i’ll leave the rest for the reader to discover!
