It’s #WorldTheatreDay, so let’s get into “Sanctuary City.” I’ve been thinking about this show since @5thwalltheatre announced its season last fall. I didn’t know anything about the play beyond its basic premise, but the way that premise called to me was undeniable. When the time came, I walked into that audition thinking what I always do, “Perform these words as if you’ll never get to perform them ever again, because you might not.” I was so honored to be chosen to bring life to Henry and provide the gagworthy yet grounded third character to this layered and nuanced love story. Henry was a character who felt so familiar to me, and I loved getting to go on an emotional journey with him that I’d never gotten to explore onstage. So, as you get into the many faces of Henry (plus some archival Hillman family photos that I submitted for the “Sanctuary City” program), I will do my thank you train. You wielded your wit like a sword. You were a shady, shady expletive. And ultimately, all you really wanted was a little cheese. I’ll miss getting to step into your shoes each night. Theatre is magic, and I’ll always be grateful to get to perform on somebody’s stage. On to the next 💞
