Following up on my rant on #Greenwashing, including #Carbonwashing. I was livid earlier this week when I walked past an upscale deli in Islington and noticed two blantantly greenwashing narratives staring at me. ⭕ Could we wash away farm chemicals? There are an increasing number of 'veg wash' products marketed as premium 'natural' products. It gives me chills that such products get to be marketed as premium products. 🥹 agrochemicals in fruits and veg do not get washed away. Most of them are designed to be absorbed by almost all tissues of the plant - the skin, the flesh, the seed, the stalk, the leaf, the root... 🥹 many types of highly toxic agrochemicals are water soluble and airborne. ie they travel downstream across water, soil and air, affecting all living things. 🥹😡 the active ingredients in most of these products are made by agrochemical producers who enjoy a market worth over £200 billion. Some of them also make drugs, including life-saving and life-extending drugs. ⭕ 'Carbon-neutral' products are good for the environment? This particular product, a plant-based milk, has actively marketed itself as 'carbon-neutral' on the premise that they buy carbon offsets, without offering any information on how the plant was farmed and processed. If you care about the environmental impact of the food you eat and drink, look up the method of farming and production. They are often the biggest piece of the impact puzzle. Logistics and packaging are part of the equation too and in fact are the areas brands pay most attention to. I'll have to do another post on the myriad of challenges to be 'carbon-neutral' and the perverse greenwashing in carbon offsets. I have been working on how to write in ways that are more reader friendly and less R2D2 like. Would love your comments! Happy Saturday and hugs to all. Thank you for joining my rants on Insta Stories earlier this week. ❤️ For now, I'm going to catch up on sleep and sea sports.
