Two things im really excited about this week : 1. My first short, When Angels Speak of Love, having its NYC premiere @mayslesdocumentarycenter for @prismaticground film festival this Thursday May 5 at 4pm <3 2. Joining @jasminprix & @sisabueno for a post screening discussion about Sara Gomez’ De Cierta Manera. The screening is happening Saturday May 7 at 7pm at BAM and is part of a series Yasmina programmed titled “In the Images, Behind the Camera: Women’s Political Cinema, 1959-1992.” It draws together works of cinematic rebellion from the Global South addressing everything from colonialism to motherhood. Sara Gomez is one of the most inventive filmmakers of postrevolutionary Cuban cinema who left behind 19 documentaries and 1 feature when she died too soon at age of 31. Black feminist in practice, she dared to tell the stories of those who history could forget. The body of work she has left behind inspires me endlessly. That they are both happening the same week, during this eclipse season of rebirth is telling, feeling honored to ground in her legacy.
