In 2005 I did a lot of work with @clawmoney, who was then an editor for Shepard Fairey’s #swindlemagazine. She encouraged me to follow creative paths that would inspire me; nothing was off limits. As a maximalist, I always looked to capture the most passionate and unexpected subjects. For this project, we stayed local, went to Brighton Beach, and found a ballroom dance school that would allow us to photograph students and teachers. I asked them to wear their performance looks and of course @clawmoney included fashion, then had them hold poses in strong light to give the viewer the ability to really see who these dancers were.
