Milton Avery: American Colourist at the Royal Academy covers the full development of Avery’s career and is the first of its kinds in Europe. The exhibition begins with his early works of landscapes to portraits and works that established him as a major American colourist. Avery’s use of different and flattened colours reminds me of Henri Matisse. Towards the end, his abstract style are clear influences for Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. It’s a lovely and joyous exhibition and being able to watch his style develop through his paintings is an incredible experience. If you haven’t seen Milton Avery: American Colourist, you still have plenty of time and there’s a related family workshop taking place this weekend. Tickets are still available at royalacademy.org.uk/event/family-studio-memory-montage The workshop is facilitated by Jake Garfield and inspired by paintings from this exhibition. You will get to experiment with printmaking and collage techniques and make an artwork based on a family memory.
