I’m excited about the #CancerMoonshot initiative as I’m sure it will save lives and inspire breakthroughs in the fight against different Cancers as we know it.
I just want to caution folks against using rhetoric like “cancer does not discriminate.” I can see why one would want to use this phrase. You could argue it evokes a sense of shared struggle and possibly even brings people together against a common cause.
However, statements like this also imply shared and equal risk, which is not the case when it comes to cancer. Cancer burden is NOT distributed equally in the population and we shouldn’t pretend it is.
There is an entire field of study dedicated to documenting and addressing persistent cancer health disparities.
Disparities exist across all cancer subtypes and most are driven by social, structural and economic inequality. Importantly, cancer disparities, like health disparities more generally, are unfair, unjust, and entirely preventable.
Let’s be mindful of our language. 🦀
