Unlearning Columbus Day myths and celebrating all Native People of the Americas. "When looking at U.S. history, we need to look back before 1776 and before 1492. The history of America starts with people who were here before Columbus. This wider lens provides an opportunity for educators to begin to take seriously the notion of indigeneity – originating naturally in a particular place – and Indigenous people prior to Columbus and prior to 1776” — Bari Walsh of Harvard Grad School of Education. We encourage ourselves and community to consider the following today and all days throughout the year: 1. Learn about the history of the land you’re standing on and practice Indigenous land acknowledgment. 2. Educate yourself on current problems affecting native peoples and how you can support. 3. Teach real Native history to the youth and incorporate works by Native scholars, authors, and healers into instruction. 4. Respect Native belief systems as you would your own religion and honor Native veterans. 5. Demand that the U.S. Congress vote on Savanna’s Act and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), S.1735, Native American Entrepreneurial and Opportunity Act; S.2092, Native American Rural Homeownership Improvement Act or S.3381, Tribal Trust Land Homeownership Act. 6. Support the ongoing fight to change race-based mascots. 7. Boost Native voices in and out of your community. 8. Buy authentic Native goods created and sold by Native artisans and businesses.
