This angel, Pieper Luis was ordered to pay $150,000 to the family of her Rxp!st + 10 years prison. She was 15 years old when she freed herself from the person who sex trafficked & sexually assaulted her by way of taking his life. Iowa doesn’t have laws in place to protect victims & especially children of sex trafficking & assault from legislative retaliation in the event that they take action to protect themselves when the form it takes is their abusers life. I was a trans youth who was sex trafficked. I barely survived years of physical, psycho/sexual abuse, I’ve been groomed & manipulated by abusers, so much as even recently. I strive everyday to heal & grow from harm caused to me & the ways I’ve been naïve in how to protect myself & not self harm, isolate from sex, love, men, & not to self loathe for the ways I couldn’t identify what was happening to me. I can only imagine what Pieper must be experiencing, in having to be so strong, in her conviction to live & protect herself & free herself, only to be threatened & incarcerated by the state, physically & economically. The layers of pain, loss this young lady, & so many like her are challenged to heal through is a very particular spiritual pain that is not easily remedied. Pieper, her life, & girls & women like her must be believed, protected, uplifted, supported, and enriched. These harms, pains & complexities we barely survive, & often do so alone. I’m thinking of all survivors of assault, abuse & especially victims of grooming & manipulation. i’m thinking about the ways that I myself have been neglectful of not only my own survival but of the surviving victims by an abuser I chose to love in my past.
