To reiterate my message earlier today, when someone expresses that they have experienced something challenging, the worst thing you can say ‘I’ve been doing it tougher’ in response. One person’s struggles doesn’t invalidate your own and of course there are always going to be people who are doing it ‘worse than you’, but highlighting that doesn’t help anyone. Struggles are relevant and valid and the most toxic thing that you can do is try to turn them into a who has it worse competition. When people express challenges they’re usually after a level of empathy. Maybe try listening? Maybe try attempting to put yourself in their shoes for a moment? I’m aware of my privilege and I’m not one to complain about much, but I also think it’s healthy to express challenges. The days of toxic positivity are done, and keeping it real is more important than ever to create genuine human connection. Teaching is tough. Tougher now than it ever has been and most people who say it’s ‘easy’ and harp on about our ‘HoLiDaYz’ wouldn’t last half a day in a classroom, let alone be able to spend 10 weeks straight teaching and complete the hours required of us to plan, program, mark, write reports, communicate with parents, create resources outside of hours. Teachers aren’t just teacher. We’re counsellors, career advisors, we manage student behaviour, support students' social development, mental health and well-being. Be kind to teachers. We aren’t trying to play down your hardships. We’re just expressing our own x #teacherlife #morethanthanks #australianteachers #teachers #teachertruth
