Many have compared monkey pox or MPX to the HIV and AIDS epidemic because of the disproportionate number of men having sex with men who contract the virus. The connection has also raised the alarm about the possibility of history repeating itself with the stigma, shame, and racism that men of color may endure as long as MPX continues to exist. It may have contributed to higher rates of infection and transmission among men of color.
