In solidarity with Indigenous communities, ALF-PA recognizes Indigenous People’s Day of Mourning. Our staff, and much of our community exists in and around Lenapehoking or Philadelphia/southeast PA- land originally stewarded for thousands of years by the Lenni Lenape tribes. Through the coercive and genocidal process of colonization notably marked in Lenapehoking by policies like the Walking Purchase of 1737 and Indian Removal Act of 1860, the land was stolen and the majority of people killed or displaced to Oklahoma. This devastating loss also featured the erosion of Lenape cultural practices in this area of land sharing, caretaking, matrilineal power, unity and cooperation which were replaced by the capitalist and colonial cultures of individualism, genocide, and exploitative pursuit of profit. Many of the origins of reproductive oppression in this country begin with reproductive violence towards Indigenous people & the African slaves forced to work the land stolen from indigenous communities. Reproductive justice will not be achieved without Indigenous liberation. In order to win our fight for a better world, we need to practice solidarity with and centering of Indigenous communities. Land acknowledgements are not enough in supporting indigenous communities, they must be accompanied by political education and resourcing of Indigenous movements. Our fund has made solidarity contributions of $2100 total to the three organizations seen in the second slide of this graphic & we encourage our supporters to support as well.
