Genevieve Goffman, The Gorgon, 2022, ice, 45 x 40 x 50 in.
Roses, childhood innocence, and snowflakes. Beauty, notoriously, fades and drips through our fingers, just like our Gorgon, the guardian of the night who watched over us through out the evening of the 26th into the small hours of the 27th.
Goffman has a pantheon of character she calls upon in her sculptures. Created through 3D modeling the ice sculpture’s design (which incorporated features inspired by swamp rats, dragons flies, caterpillars and dragons) becomes a creature that is a reoccurring feature in Goffman’s work. He is depicted inhabiting abandoned nuclear facilities and in the ruins of rotting castles.
At the Merde! gala he took on a new life as the Ice Sculpture. At 99 Scott he greeted the first guests as a glittering dragon, and as the night faded so did he. The Ice Sculpture elevates the Gorgon from a toxic reminder of fallen power, to a symbol of an ecstatic moment, burning briefly. Much like the event itself the the piece is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the fantasy of a real high power gala. As the night past and the ice sculpture softly melted he began to resemble more and more the traditional swan associated with such events.
**SOLD. Buyer received the water from the melted ice sculpture on view at Merde! that was collected into a vintage uranium glass perfume bottle. Buyer owns the rights to reproduce "The Gorgon" in ice at any scale**
