Meet with Symrise Master Perfumer Emilie Coppermann 5/6
.
You are the longest-serving perfumer in the Symrise Paris team. What was it like when you arrived 25 years ago?
Very different: it was Florasynth then, and we weren’t in this very modern building but in a Parisian apartment in the 17th arrondissement. The walls, mirrors and doors were hung with fabric and there were thick carpets. Nothing like this! (laughs) Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Dominique Ropion managed the place. Back then there were 20 fine fragrance launches a year, and they had just won Fahrenheit and Amarige: it was the place to be! I was lucky enough to go there for my internships, then got hired just afterwards and stayed put through the various takeovers and mergers which resulted in Symrise 15 years ago. My taste for working collectively, and a few prestigious wins have given me a special role in the team. In 2016, I was appointed Master Perfumer, which gave me extra responsibilities and a role as spokesperson for the perfumers, particularly with management. It’s a lovely reward for the positive energy I’ve always liked to embody.
Is the collective aspect of your job important to you?
I’d even say that I couldn’t do without it. I’m not at all a solitary person – that’s what comes from being part of a big family! When I’m creating, I’m open to all ideas and all criticism: whether I decide to listen to them or not, it’s always interesting. As I see it, other people are a huge source of inspiration, I’m a real sponge. I like to get people around me to smell my creations, hear people talking about perfume. In the end, I really like a win when it’s the result of teamwork.
