Playing or engaging with art? Is there a difference and does it matter?
I love art & design and like most adults, we have the basic understanding that what we are here to see/experience is precious. I also I like to immerse my little ones in this world so yes, I do bring them along to places you won’t normally have children running around at.
If children aren’t exposed to certain situations, how will they ever learn when to play and when to engage? I trust my 4yo in most situations but my 2yo is still learning and that’s ok. What’s not ok is when people make you feel bad for letting your children ‘play’.
Children learn through play. Play makes learning uniquely relevant to them. After playing or engaging, we reflect, ask questions and make new discoveries.
Here is an artwork which we could interact with. How many people did you see walk past this and not interact with it? A lot, when we were there but as soon as we started to interact with it, so did they and I bet they walked away looking up the artist as well as Rodin’s The Thinker.
Had M not seen Rodin the year before, would she had known the reference?
