We renamed @heidisevestre “Heidi-loves-science” because of her limitless enthusiasm for anything science related. She’d hop out of bed early every morning to read her protocols and check her equipment, then she’d spend the day working to make sure that we properly executed each project. We did all kinds of things, ranging from core samples from the Pool Wall (much harder to do than expected) to deploying a robot for @NASA that measures temperature and salinity in the fjord. In between, Heidi spent her time mapping icebergs by drone and digging snow pits. She was a science dynamo, always educating the rest of the team with a smile. One of my lessons from the trip was that so much of “science” is just doing the hard work - getting to the place and taking measurements. No amount of computer modeling can completely replace measurements of the actual world.
