In honor of Single in September getting 400k views in 2 days, I wanted to share a little BTS story that proves why this music video is so important and how far we‘ve come, but also how far we have to go.
Let me paint a picture. It was a sunny, beautiful day in Malibu. It was our last day of filming and the small team and I all carpooled to the beach. @zolita , @tringsby , @nowthisisliving and I were in the convertible blasting early 2000’s hits.
When we arrived, it was quiet. @savvyflicks began filming @tringsby and @zolita frolicking on the beach together. It was wholesome and beautiful. It was a celebration of queerness, nostalgia and freedom.
It was then that an older woman approached us. “If you don’t leave, I’ll call the sheriffs department on you guys,” she exclaimed in a snarky, aggressive tone.
She proceeded to accuse us of shooting “a porno”. She said, “you should go to Venice beach where the homeless people are,” which was offensive on so many levels.
I maintained my cool, but suggested to the team that we go to another beach, all the while being verbally accosted.
It was national coming out day. We were all a little shaken up, but then I began fighting back. “Would you be this angry if they were a straight couple?!” The answer was no.
Instead of letting homophobia ruin our incredible day, we ended up getting the last shot before we lost light and laughed the entire way home because while she was filled with hate, we were all filled with pride. I adore you @zolita ! Thank you for being the queer icon everyone deserves.
