“In the spring of 2017, Judson Studios completed a two-year restoration of the entire glass program of Unity Temple (1906–1908) in Oak Park, Illinois. Still a house of worship, the building’s main feature is a twenty-five-panel skylight that Wright hoped would bring “a sense of a happy cloudless day into the room,” as he wrote in his autobiography. Although a number of Wright’s homes contain a significant amount of glass, this Oak Park project stands out, with 102 windows totaling 2,236 square feet of glass in the temple and connected parish house. Because of the simple lines of the spaces, the geometric glass designs are key features of both buildings. The fifty-three laylights set into recessed frames in the ceiling are composed primarily of opalescent glass that filters natural light throughout the interior space. The electrical light fixtures are also crafted from opalescent glass to soften their intensity, while the clerestory windows are predominantly clear glass, allowing a wash of sunlight into the sanctuary. These windows were all packed into twenty crates and loaded on a dedicated long-haul truck. They arrived in Garvanza in 2015 and filled the upper gallery space of Judson Studios, Wright’s unmistakable lines and grids peeking out from every available shelf and wall space.”
