Road to Home. @roxy @maluhiakinimaka Directed by @silkymerman Hawai’i is everything to me. It’s more than my home, it’s the land that made me who I am and the place that inspires me and everything I’ll ever do. Surfing is my connection to my piko, my navel, the umbilical cord that connects us to our ancestors in the past and descendants in the future. It grounds me in who I am and where I come from. I’m eternally grateful for this practice that has been created and preserved by Polynesians for us all to enjoy around the world. To have this project told in ‘ōlelo Hawai’i is so special to me. It’s a reminder that the deep Hawaiian roots in surfing are alive and well. When we wrote this, I was thousands of miles away from home, filming in Toronto Canada for 6 months. I was taking ‘olelo Hawai’i via University of Hawai’i online, waking up at 1am to take my classes with the time change😅, so tired and homesick but so happy to have a little ‘ōlelo in my life. To hear our language being used and shared makes me so proud and excited for the future. Here’s to home, ‘ohana, and he’e nalu. E ola i ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi!
