So...this was one of those shoots. NO PERMIT! NO MOTORHOME! NO GROOMER! NO WARDROBE STYLIST! NO PROPS! NO CATERING! NO CRAFT SERVICE! NO BATHROOMS!
A few months ago Empire Magazine called me and asked if I could photograph legendary director Michael Mann. I said, “Of course!”
The magazine suggested we shoot in a gritty, industrial space in downtown LA. I said, “Of course!”
Then the magazine called me to say that given his pre-production schedule on “Ferrari," Mr. Mann would be unable to take the time involved in making the roundtrip downtown and did I have any suggestions for a gritty, industrial location in West Los Angeles. And I said, “Can you open Google Maps?”
It turns out that seven blocks away from our office is THE PERFECT alley with all kinds of fantastic walls, fences, staircases and graffiti. And dumpsters! And cracked cement! And a drainage gutter right down the middle!
We scouted the alley, sent the scouting pics over the wireless to the folks in London and the LOVED IT!
Mr. Mann arrived at 6pm on the appointed day and graciously posed like a bad ass in the five different setups that we had found while @erincpeterson held the large Photek and @nd_lei held the head with the 7” reflector, @evanmulling held the production together and @evlasic held onto the laptop for dear life.
So many thank yous to @joannamoran and @neonmessiah, for whom I would work anywhere at anytime under any circumstances.
