18-year-old Sebastian Aspron was at the start of his freshman year at Florida Gulf Coast University when Hurricane Ian roared into his Fort Myers community. The home where he and his parents lived was relatively unscathed, but he saw the damage in the community around him and wanted to help. At first, he and his friends were helping informally in their neighborhood, helping a widow whose first floor was flooded and her cars ruined. With his college temporarily closed and free time on his hands, he desperately wanted to be part of the recovery effort. He learned about Team Rubicon scrolling through social media. He signed up and was deployed as a Greyshirt just days after the storm. On his first day of deployment, he conducted site surveys. Sebastian and his team pulled up to a mobile home damaged in the storm, and a woman came out of the trailer and immediately broke down crying. “I’ve heard of Team Rubicon,” she said. “And now you’re here to help.” Sebastian helped to calm the woman, who was relieved that help had arrived. Her roof had been damaged and she wanted to make sure she didn’t lose any other belongings when the next rain came. The sense of gratitude she shared stayed with Sebastian. “People are so thankful for what we do,” he said. “Their kind words are all we need.” “Even though it’s tough work and you are sore and sunburned, it’s so rewarding. So many people have your back.” he said referring to the other Greyshirts he worked alongside. At Team Rubicon we share our passion for people in the way we help others, we are proud to have Sebastian along with all of our dedicated Greyshirts be a part of our TRibe.
