I gave a short talk to all of the social clubs hosting booths just before Together Fest started about why I was doing this. After the event, several club organizers came up to me and said something I’ll never forget: “There are people in our groups who told us they might not still be here if it wasn’t for our weekly events.” That stopped me cold. For a lot of us, building community isn’t just about fun or friendship — it’s about survival. It’s about creating one space, one night a week or month, where someone who’s struggling can look forward to being seen, included, and reminded that they matter. Robert Putnam wrote in Bowling Alone that being part of even one social group dramatically lowers rates of depression, isolation, and suicide. The science backs it — but so do the stories. I used to volunteer at a suicide prevention hotline and have heard firsthand how many people are truly struggling. The silence on the other end of the line can be deafening — and it’s something that only human connection can reach through. Together Fest wasn’t just an event — it was proof that when people gather with intention, they save each other. Music, laughter, shared movement, and simple human presence — these things heal us. If you’re reading this, please don’t underestimate how much your presence can mean to someone else. Show up. Go to your friend’s DnD game night, kickball game, take a dancing class, join a run club, or just say hi to a new person. Be part of something.
