As Hurricane Ian's damaging winds have subsided, Floridians continue to be affected by the aftermath of sewage spills across their coasts. The Sunshine State has a long history of water pollution problems due to its aging wastewater infrastructure—but climate change, sea level rise, and stronger, wetter hurricanes are exacerbating this problem. Since Hurricane Ian hit, poorly treated sewage has flowed through coastal communities and into Florida's already fragile waterways and ocean, illustrating the severity of the sewage pollution crisis.
