William Lees Judson, founder and first in a line of five generations of family ownership of Judson Studios, screen printed here using powder frit on clear glass which is then fused together in the kiln using @bullseyeglass. William Lees Judson was a plein air painter and the first dean of @uscedu school of fine arts before entering the world of decorative glass with his sons following their move to Los Angeles late in the 19th century. This little fused glass commission was done for a resident of our neighborhood who shares our adoration of the art and architectural history of Los Angeles, Pasadena, and the Arroyo Seco.
“In 1897, at the age of twenty-five, Walter founded his own studio, Colonial Art Glass [later known as W.H. Judson Art Glass Company and eventually Judson Studios], on Central Place (also known as Mott Alley). He established the studio with the help of his father [William Lees], engaging brothers Lionel as the shop foreman and Paul helping on the business side. William Lees executed some of the early designs.” - From our book "JUDSON: Innovation in Stained Glass," by @ddjudson and @steffienelson and published by @angelcitypress. See and read more about the booming metropolis of Los Angeles during the early 20th century and how Judson Studios contributed to the decorative arts.
