Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of story telling- the stories we tell other people, the stories we tell ourselves. It was around this time in August last year when I made my first trip down to the delta and met my friend Sylvester in a real kismet type of way. This was a life changing experience. We talk regularly and our calls always start the same way, “ZACH! What’s happening big guy? How’s New York?” He often shares big ideas, and asks about my love life and says “I’m finna come there and see those bright lights in Times Square.” The first and subsequent trips I’ve made to the south have been on my mind a lot, and how I’ve seen and learned so much just being in the presence of this guy. Every time I get off the phone with him I’m left thinking that it wasn’t any accident that we met and it inspires me to continue making work on this seemingly perilous road less traveled.
