In Hoboken, Antwerp, I was pretending to be George Michael at a school’s “performance” and “talent” contest. I didn’t win 😅! But it was really a special moment, my first solo. I had been studying his every move in the now iconic Faith video, which was on a loop on MTV at that time. I still remember the excitement, the belief in myself, as it was the very first time I was alone on stage shaking my hips and trying to give off popstar vibes! This little fake Faith boy would be happy to be me today: no matter my flaws, my age, my journey... He’d see my strength, my resilience. He’d also say hi and thanks to the 50K followers (wow this whilst actively avoiding hashtags 😅...!). Way back then the idea of Instagram didn’t even exist (this was 1987, it would take another 23 years before Instagram would be invented in 2010), which just accentuates how far I’m removed from all these childhood moments. When things are weird, hard, sad, heavy or rough, you gotta have faith...! Get in costume, put on the music and take the stage! Love and dimmed, cosy, warm, sensual light for all of you.
