Wondering if I had just missed William Kentridge in action by turning right instead of left first. Answer in last slide.
William Kentridge is South Africa’s most celebrated living artist with a globally acclaimed practice, which spans etching, drawing, collage, film and sculpture to tapestry, theatre, opera, dance and music.
Taking over the Royal Academy's main galleries, William Kentridge's solo exhibition is unexpected and captivating. The sheer size and volume of works takes you on a fully immersive journey throughout 40 years of his career. I don’t have a favourite, okay, maybe the etchings and charcoal drawings but I love them all and if there’s one paid exhibition you need to see this Autumn, this is it.
Also, I had my 2yo with me on this visit but he remained in the pram. I don’t feel this exhibition is suitable for very young children, however, I did see older children there. My 4yo would have enjoyed the films and we could potentially discuss the artist’s use of symbolism through animals and that’s probably it. There is a lot you could takeaway from this show but you know your child and that decision is yours to make.
Another way to introduce William Kentridge to your little ones is to join RA’s Family Studio workshops. The next workshop on 16th October takes inspiration from William Kentridge’s animations where you will make puppets and bring them to life through storytelling.
Tickets have sold out but I highly recommended coming along as they always allow walk-ins when they have the space for it. More details here: https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/event/family-studio-shadow-storytellers
