I just went to St. Croix with the Tim Duncan Foundation to continue the process of rebuilding local basketball courts after years of hurricane damage—namely, the devastating Hurricanes Irma and Maria of 2017. We installed new hoops, began renovating an adjacent shelter, and continued to clear the land to prepare for the final stages of court resurfacing and line painting. As a kid growing up in small town Pennsylvania, I spent hours upon hours at our local court—the place where I started to chase my first dream —and vividly remember the day we got new hoops put up. Of course our courts weren’t on the shores of the Carribean...but just like Gene Hackman taught us in Hoosiers...”10ft high—you’ll find it to be the exact same measurements of your court back home”. Since 2017, the foundation has raised over $3M for hurricane relief. And now that the immediate needs of food, water, shelter, and power have been satisfied, it was time to recreate a place where kids could once again chase their dream. On our last day, when the hoops were up and the nets were hung, it made our entire trip to see a group of young kids holding a basketball, walking towards the new courts as we drove away. It is so rare in this world to continually be impressed by someone, time and time again. Tim has been that person since we met...in 1994.
