In 2016, snapchat released a Bob Marley selfie filter for the "4/20 day" celebrations. A filter that darkened users' skin in a caricature of Bob Marley. This may not have been the first documented instance of blackface but it was one that we remember vividly as in the long running trend that seems to be growing. . To quote Frederick Douglass's righteous response in The North Star. Blackface imitators, he said, were "the filthy scum of white society, who have stolen from us a complexion denied to them by nature, in which to make money, and pander to the corrupt taste of their white fellow citizens". Despite being time apart, his statement holds water still in today’s age and will continue to do. . A lot of emotion summed up in one phrase “not again” best describes what it was having come across the FN Meka entity. An entity born out of the need to not only continue the bastardization & exploitation of a Black music genre but also the further erasure and mitigation of Black musicians. Understand that minstrel / blackface has never been about highlighting Black people in a positive light. Built into its foundation is the desire to ridicule, mitigate and ultimately eradicate the humanity of Black people often through intensified stereotypes acted or emphasized upon. We see that with FN Meka, this is accompanied with the help of A.I. which ends the “A.I can’t be racist conversation”. . Understand that as Black people we want to simply be. Devoid of any external forced assumption of who / what and often where we must be and continuously even the virtual world where many run to for solace is being taken from us but then again when was it ever safe and welcoming for Black folks.
