One light, four ways; Photek umbrella mixed with interior ambient, gridded head over the camera mixed with projector lamp, bare-head B1 mixed with exterior ambient and a Photek umbrella mixed with exterior ambient. This was our shoot with Jen Salke, the head of Amazon Studios for last week’s Variety cover story. Amazon Studios has just moved into their new offices on the Culver Studios Lot, originally created by silent movie pioneer Thomas H. Ince in 1918. A few movies you might have heard of were filmed there...just a few classics from Hollywood's Golden Age...including Gone with the Wind (1939), A Star is Born (1937) and Citizen Kane (1940). And the Culver Studios was also used for television shows such as The Andy Griffith Show, Lassie, Batman, The Nanny and, more recently, Scrubs, Arrested Development and Cougar Town. But I digress. The point is...we did six set ups in an hour in fifteen minutes in and around the historical landmark, don’t-lean-stuff-against-the-walls, Colonial Revival Southern Mansion that’s been on the lot for a century. No presh. We scouted. We pre lit for a few hours and then...we went to work. We? Indeed. @evanmulling ran the show brilliantly as always. @Joshua_cullen_goodell ran the light like a maniac. Intern @rapberry crushed it and intern candidate @Nathan_warren_hayes killed it AND went to get us lunch! And @weironset handed me the camera and handled the files and I handed the camera back to him and told him how to organize the files. Thank you! Every set up (except for one) was a one-light set up, bleeding in ambient to get the scene just where we wanted it before adding just the right amount of strobe to light our subject without her looking lit. Horizontals by Canon. Verticals by Hasselblad. All this in the service of the great and powerful @jenniferdorn at @Variety. And thank you @jennifersalke for being such a wonderful subject. And about that last image...ask the crew.
