It’s no secret that Bunny’s Buddies is seen as a “controversial” rescue for not operating like a “normal” rescue. But, as uncomfortable as some of the things we say here can be, there is a much bigger agenda at hand and that is to get people to realize...
That WE are the problem! Including myself a few years back. It takes a deep love for animals to really sit with the words I say here as most people just unfollow us and call me crazy but, once in a while, someone emails us a follow up on how we have changed their entire outlook.
These emails mean SO much as they confirm to us we are on the right track. It’s great to get a dog into a home but do you know how much better it is to truly CHANGE a heart, mind and soul? 🙏🏻
“I have followed you for over a year and even inquired about a dog once. I was one of those who couldn’t understand why asking if a dog was good with other dogs was an issue.
What was the problem with that I wondered?
I now get it.
I became a rescue volunteer last February. There was one dog that was shut down who didn’t leave his kennel for 7 weeks, he was that terrified.
One day, I decided I couldn’t watch him suffer one more day, it was killing me. I brought him home to foster, even though I knew he was extremely reactive to other dogs, had extreme anxiety, etc.
I kept him in a separate room from my dog for three weeks. I slept on my kitchen floor with him for a month, and then did an incredibly slow and controlled introduction with my other dog. Fast forward to today, I adopted him because I knew I could provide exactly what HE needs - a dog friend to help him with confidence, a yard to play in, a solid routine, and a peaceful home.
Now, him and my other dog are inseparable. He was diagnosed with TVT cancer after I adopted him and is getting chemo now (treatable). There is nothing that would ever make me quit him. I have 0 expectations of him and everything I do is to give him the life he deserves. He is doing so well!
So now, I agree whole heartedly with everything you say and now get what rescue means. Thank you for all you do.”
Speaking up saves lives. Thank you to everyone who lets my words in 💖
