Over 1.81 billion people which is approximately 23% of the global population is at risk of severe flooding with further heartbreaking stats highlighting that out of those 1.81 billion, some 780 million people living on under $5.50 a day are at risk from once-in-a-hundred-year floods. It doesn’t take a genius to know which parts of the world a large section of the 1.81 billion are residing. . To quote @vanessanakate1, “Climate change is no longer a ticking time bomb. It is already exploding.” and each named country on that list is an example of this. 19 countries are listed and there are many more that have & continue to experience detrimental flooding with the latest being Pakistan where over a thousand lives have been lost thus far and millions in need of aid following this unprecedented flood. NB: again, remember that over 780 million people living under $5.50 a day are at risk from “ONCE IN A HUNDRED YEAR FLOODS”. Quoting another African climate activist Gilbert Kouamé (@/KwameGilbert on twitter) “The rain is a result of the combined effect of change in rainfall patterns with a trend towards more intense rainfall in West Africa due to climate change and an ongoing la Niña event often linked to above average rainfall in the region. These are the drivers behind the heavy rainfall recorded in Accra on 24 May, the 100-year rainfall event in Abidjan on both 21 and 30 June, national record rainfall in 34 years recorded in Banjul on 31 July and extreme rainfall in Dakar on 05 August,” Whilst all these are happening, your favourite celebrities, capitalists, public figures & governments continue to fuel lifestyles and capitalist systems that drive us to the end and lead to the deaths of Black, Brown and Indigenous peoples. Whilst we may be criticised for pointing & calling them out, we shouldn’t & can’t afford to continuously be in repose watching the earth get extirpated.
