Today January 12th, keep an eye out for this green comet. Words by @cosmogyny ・・・ A malachite-bright streak. Green slit in the night sky like a cat’s eye. The comet includes a lost age in its arcing embrace over Earth: the Upper Paleolithic. An ancestor is chipping at an ivory tooth, creating a theriomorphic lion statuette in Germany. Glaciers translate their alabaster heft into rainclouds and initiate the humid Mousterian Plouvial period in Africa, steaming plains into plush viridity, coaxing birdsong out of the ecotones that slip like skin along the serpentine shores of new rivers. In the next ten thousand years most of the megafauna will go extinct. But now you can still feel the drumbeat of mammoth hooves through the moss. Scent the electric sting of saber-toothed cats slipping through dense undergrowth. Today, January 12th, a comet will become visible in the night sky that has not passed earth for 50,000 years. I like to think of comets like sewing needles, stitching together time periods at great temporal removes. Today we are stitched back into the Upper Paleolithic. And as the comet arcs across the heavens, let it pull tight the thread so that the fabric of that time might come close to us in our contemporary desperation. If we stare into that green eye passing by, might we catch a glimpse of its last sight of earth: a time when humans could pass like songs through ecosystems, disturbing nothing, leaving behind a decaying channel of breath and inquiry? And let this comet stitch in time remind us that we are just that – a miniscule stitch in a cosmic tapestry too physically and temporally large for us to ever hold in our minds, in our brief, feverish organisms. 50,000 years ago when this comet passed it saw “you”. But you were dispersed. Carbon laced into a fern. An electron unzipping the solidity of an ancient shell. Vasculature of iron still threaded like secret blood inside the Earth’s crust. This comet remembers when you were numerous. When you were a pantheon of materialities. Let it summon that plurality in you tonight as it returns to our sky. Let it remind you of the miracle of your scattered matter briefly coalescing into an embodied You.
