Polar Sun landed in Nome Harbor on Tuesday night at 8pm after a successful transit of the Northwest Passage from east to west. The voyage took us 112 days and covered 5,877 nautical miles. For ten of those days we were trapped in ice in Pasley Bay. A total of 13 crew contributed to our success, but only Ben-Wah (@zartman_rigging) and I completed the entire voyage from Maine to Alaska. I could write a book about Ben-Wah, and in fact, I think I will. But In short, I couldn’t have—and I wouldn’t have—attempted this without him by my side. Ben and I, two old friends from Yosemite, did this together. And no matter what happens from here on out in life, no one will ever be able to take this shared experience away from us. Of course, we couldn’t have gotten half as far as we did without an all star crew, including, most especially, @renan_ozturk and @rudy.le. My only regret is that they weren’t with us when we landed in Nome. We also might not have made it if weren’t for @davidthoreson and @ben_spiess, who dropped everything going on in their busy lives, with one day’s notice, to join Ben-Wah and I for the final 1,150 mile leg from Tuktoyaktuk to Nome. David is the only American to have completed the Northwest Passage in both directions. Without his expert hand and experience, we might not have made it through the Bering sea super storm that caught us at at the very end. I’ll need to do another post to thank everyone who has supported me in this mad endeavor, but for now, here is a huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to my crew and also to everyone at @natgeo. You all took a wild flyer on both me and on Polar Sun, and now that it’s done, we can all look back and ask, ‘What the heck were we thinking?’ I know some of you are probably wondering: What now? Polar Sun will be hauled for the winter in Nome. And when I’m done writing this next book, I will be back to continue with what I hope will be a multi year voyage of discovery around the 🌎 with the Synnott family and as many friends as we can cram aboard. 📸 The calm before the storm at Point Hope by @davidthoreson #thearcticmystery @north_sails @thenorthface @gillmarine @hydrovane @northatlanticinflatables
