My answer to this question was “Yes, why not? “💁🏽♀️.
Years ago I was told hairstyles like braids, locs, curly hair, twists, afro puffs, colored hair, and even wraps were “unprofessional” especially working in the healthcare field. To call these styles unprofessional is another way to accept obsolete opinions of professional appearance and beauty standards.
As a physician I wear many of these styles, and it does not determine my intelligence or the quality of care I provide to patients. In fact, many compliment my hair and at times, my hairstyle allows me to connect with patients on a different level. Therefore I will continue to be unapologetically me and show up as my true self ❤️.
👉🏾Can we rewrite the rules around what looks “professional”? Let me know what you think below 🗣.
