Today we recognize Emancipation Day across Canada—a day to commemorate the anniversary of when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire. ⁠ ⁠ On this day, we reflect on the history of slavery in Canada and re-affirm our support for Black authors, books, creators, and changemakers who continue to fight anti-Black racism at home and abroad. Books are essential tools in sparking meaningful discussions with those around us and through their pages we build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
