Tonight, Miss America went red & gold—red to honor our incredible partnership with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative and gold in honoring Gold Star families—the immediate family members of service members who died while serving in a conflict. More to come on this inspiring evening, but I couldn’t let the moment pass without sharing what the red dress pin on my sash symbolizes. The red dress is a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. Only 55% of women know that heart disease is their No. 1 killer, and less than half know what’s considered healthy for cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. I wear this pin to stand with women affected by heart disease and to raise awareness so every woman can take action to protect her health.
