On Saturday, @davidvirellespiano called me to let me know he’d been tapped to fill in for our hero @bill.frisell (to whom we are sending healing wishes ✨) at @vanguardjazz this week. As a result, he unfortunately will no longer be with us for our show at @bryantparknyc this Friday. But I couldn’t be more excited to share that the incredible @rileymulherkar will be stepping in to join @ianyhchang and I for our trio set. Riley and I have been working together in various contexts (including my Standards Vol. I EP) for the past few years and it has been really inspiring watching him hone his approach to producing and developing sound on the trumpet. He’s going to be a perfect fit for what we have in store. Friday’s set is going to be very improvisational, sound-focused and spacious, highlighting the resonances of natural environments, with room to get intense at times if and when called for. I hope you’ll come share the experience with us, which will also include a rare solo performance from Ian. Music starts at 7pm and it’s FREE. Maybe bring a blanket so you can lie down and let the sound wash over you. And I also hope you’ll go head David and his trio this week at the Vanguard ♾
