#sponsored When you’re down and depressed, you can sometimes find comfort in the least expected people, animals, places, or things. What brings you comfort when you’re feeling gloomy? For me, it’s my puppy, Harlow. It’s astounding how animals can sense shifts in your mental health, especially when you’re in distress. In so many ways, Harlow has been like my unofficial therapist, pushing me through my worst days, and enjoying time with me on my best days. When I’m stuck in bed, she always finds her way into my arms for cuddles. I’m very prone to self-isolating when I’m depressed, but with Harlow around, I never really feel alone. She gives me purpose and gets me outside, even when I don’t want to leave my apartment. No matter how down and out I am, she doesn’t judge me and is a loyal and loving companion.
Of course, pets can certainly help you feel better, but they aren’t a durable solution, nor do pets help everyone in the ways that Harlow has helped me. Depression looks different for everyone. While there are a multitude of ways to address your depression, sometimes we don’t know where to look, or which options might work for us individually. This is why I’ve partnered with @Janssenglobal on the Depression Looks Like Me campaign to help provide resources tailored to the LGBTQIA community.
