Today my debut novel, Woman of Light, is published. Last night, I cried in my hotel room and told my ancestors the world will know our stories now, about the grave injustices enacted upon my people, about our beautiful souls and desires and clothes, about our hopes and dreams. This book is dedicated to my great grandma Esther and my auntie Lucy, women who were never able to go to school past 8 years old, who couldn’t read a novel but who were deeply intelligent and kind.
