I know I’m not alone in having to pursue a career just to make my mother happy. As the eldest daughter born into a desi immigrant family, my mom wanted me to have everything she didn’t. Her idea of stability included getting the highest degree (doctorate), having a stable paycheck, 401K, and health insurance. She didn’t measure success with happiness because in her life she had to measure success with how much food was at the table. Starting a business, pursuing my passion, and leaving behind a stable pharmacist job is not something she’s able to wrap around her mind.
