I’m interested in plants which bear the label “invasive.” There is something fascinating about the resilience of these plants and, as someone obsessed with flora, I’m curious about how we as a species might better work with them. Here in the northeast, there is an overgrowth of Japanese barberry and phragmites. In the photo above, I’m standing in front of a wall of phrag that is attempting to take over the natural wetlands at @vanishingpointfarm. I’ve wondered if anyone has tried making paper from the reeds? Traditionally, it was used in the thatch roofing trade. My yellow shirt was dyed using Japanese barberrry I cut and brought to @caramariepiazza. Besides the beautiful dye it renders, I’ve heard its fruit is edible. In the collaborations between humans and plants, the ground is fertile for innovation. What gets me most excited is problem solving. This photo was taken by @shelterupstate for @archdigest.
