With her new show The Recruit now streaming on Netflix, Laura Haddock has extended her impressive repertoire of roles as a ruthless Russian CIA asset who will do just about anything to survive: “[she’s] a survivor so she’s ready to protect herself and defend herself and attack in any situation.” Though the role could not perhaps be further from Haddock herself, her portrayal is as convincing as it is mesmerising, one which took an immense amount of schooling and practice to perfect: “You have to get into a rhythm of a language or an accent, and that actually helps you find someone’s personality,” said the actor in the winter issue of Glass, in response to her experience learning Russian. Though dialect was one thing she had to nail, embodying the essence of the character and her tragic backstory was a separate entity entirely, and she found inspiration and admiration when in discussion with different Russian women: “They will defend and protect themselves and the people that they care about until the end and I loved that.” See Laura Haddock’s portrayal as Max Meladze in season one of The Recruit, now streaming on Netflix.
