being a black person that loves water, especially the ocean, can be isolating. the beach is a traditionally white space and we are typically unfamiliar with even the simple things, like needing an umbrella and sunscreen. i grew up 10 min from the oceanfront and i was still rarely able to convince my friends to come get in the water... if they ever made it to the sand. it just perceived as uncomfortable. when i met @____brick he was working on a way to change that narrative and i was stoked to help. @ebonybeachclub is an invitation to the beach for black people that skip out every summer. the goal is to get more of us in the water by throwing kickbacks on the beach while providing surf lessons. the community is huge and the vibes are immaculate. more black people in LA are getting comfortable at the beach and in the water. i hope the people that come out are hanging out near the water between kickbacks too! we love everything that happening around the beach club and the way that it’s bringing our people and nature back together... that said, these events are free to attend but not to host. when @sperry approached me for this series, the first thing i thought about was how to include ebony beach club. they did more than i was expecting... sperry has agreed to donate $15k to @ebonybeachclub to help us continue to introduce more of our community to the ocean in a way that you can only do with a dj booth in the back of an el camino. i’ve gained a lot of perspective from sitting down and talking about this whole project. sometimes i’m guilty of getting wrapped up in the fun and work of it and not truly reflecting, but this opportunity has shown me the impact that we are capable of making and for that, from everyone that does and will come out to play with us, i can only say thank you. thank you. thank you. thank you. . 📷: @brielakin . @claimastories @bimmawilliams @faithevebee @theunprofessional @ebonybeachclub #reclaimyourwater
