In the mountains of Niigata, The House of Light is both a ryokan and an immersive work of art—where architecture, light, and nature move in quiet harmony. Designed by Turrell, the home features a retractable roof over the tatami room, allowing the sky itself to become the artwork. By day, the house was still and meditative—a mirror for reflection and calm. At night, the roof opened to a celestial show I’ll never forget. Hard to sleep when the sky is performing above you. But eventually we drifted off, curled up beneath it until the second show at sunrise. Between moments under the stars, we soaked in the onsen downstairs—lined in soft light, warm and silent. One of the most transcendent experiences of my life. Truly top five. So grateful to experience with friends and loved ones.
