A Guest Post by @odunifehistory Please support @odunifehistory’s work to decolonize African history and tell Africa’s stories from an Afrocentric perspective. How much do you know about Winnie Madikizela Mandela? Asides from being Mandela’s spouse, she was a woman that was larger than life. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (Sept. 26, 1936-April 2, 2018)! Rest in Power 🙏🏽 “Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela-Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and leader. A member of the African National Congress (ANC) political party, she served on the ANC's National Executive Committee and headed its Women's League. Madikizela-Mandela was known as Mama Wetu meaning "Mother of the Nation". Winnie Mandela was often vilified and demonized by the mainstream media. I would like to shine light on her life’s story in a more balanced way to provide a more objective picture of a woman who gave so much, carried so much, and sacrificed so much for her country and the people whom she loved so dearly 🖤 A woman that was neither saint nor sinner, but a product of a system that attacked, terrorized, and irrevocably changed the trajectory of her life. Who chooses our heroes and our villains? Is it us or someone else? Are we seeing ourselves through the lens of other people's interests? 🔎 Swipe through the slides and share your insights in the comment section with me. Asante!
